Lyme disease is caused by tick bites. Lyme disease is caused directly by the Borrelia burgdorferi bacterium, as it is commonly known in the United States. In Europe, a different form of bacterium, Borrelia afzelii, also causes Lyme disease . Ticks will pick up the bacteria when they bite deer, or rodents such as mice and rats. Humans can get this disease if they are bitten by infected ticks.

Different areas of the body are affected by Lyme disease. The bacteria enters the body at the location of the tick bite. The infection can spread and result in a red rash on the skin, and individuals usually suffer from flu type symptom. With time, it can affect the heart, nervous system, and joints.

There are three stages to Lyme disease:

(1) early localized disease with skin inflammation
(2) early disseminated disease with heart and nervous system involvement, including palsies and meningitis
(3) late disease featuring motor and sensory nerve damage and brain inflammation as well as arthritis.

The skin will develop increasing areas of redness during the early stages of Lymes Disease. Usually within days, or weeks of the initial tick bite. Individuals may also notice a brighter redness with a “bulls eye” type of appearance. This type of rash is known as “erythema migrans”. Most people will not even be aware that they have been bitten by a tick. And they may not even display signs of redness, so when examined by a doctor, the doctor may not be able to diagnose the illness. 25 percent of people never even develop a rash.

Fatigue will often accompany the redness of the skin. Other types of symptoms include swollen glands, headaches, and stiff of joints and muscles. The symptoms can be very similar to a virus infection.

The redness that individuals experience usually go away in about 30 days without any type of treatment. In several weeks to months after the individual first notices the skin redness, the bacteria will spread to other parts of the body. Eventually the disease can spread to the heart, nervous system, and joints.

Lyme disease in later stages can cause inflammation of the heart muscle. This could possibly lead to abnormal heart rhythms, or even heart failure.

Facial muscle paralysis, meningitis, Arthritis, inflammation of the joints, pain, swelling, and stiffness are among the symptoms that people experience.

In most cases, only one, or just a few joints are affected. The knees are the most common joints that are affected. Some individuals can also experience confusion, depression, and anxiety. Like any illness, it’s always best to make an appointment to see a doctor if you suspect that you are in the early stages of Lymes disease.
